Evhen Karas

Gallerist, curator, contemporary art expert 

Evhen Karas is a founder of the «Karas gallery» (1995) that became one of the first contemporary art galleries in Ukraine. He also founded the Association of Ukrainian Contemporary Art Workers in 2001. From 1998 to 2002 was a chairman of board of the Soros Centre for Contemporary Art. From 2000 to 2001 was an advisor to the Minister of culture and arts of Ukraine. In 2003–2005 was a member of the Public Council under the Committee on Culture and Spirituality of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine; in 2007–2008 — head of the Kyiv Cultural Environment Rescue Committee «Culture Againt Vandalism». 

Since 1995 has curated and organized over 300 artistic projects, including regular exhibitions at the «Karas Gallery», the National State Multi-Museum Project «Mystetskyi Arsenal», projects of the Igor Voronov private collection «August Rodin. Sculpture», «Alexander Archipenko» (International Convention Center Ukrainian House), «Demétre Chiparus », «Edgar Degas. Complete Collection of Sculptures», «Vladimir Nemukhin», Art Festival «Russian Non-Conformism and Underground of the 60th» (Kyiv National Museum of Russian Art).

«Karas Gallery» formed one of the most extensive collections of contemporary Ukrainian art, numbering over 500 pieces. Since 2006 Evhen Karas has been a creator and organizer of the annual group portfolio project «A4. Artists draw». The project collection is the most extensive ballpoint pen drawings collection in the world (over 3000 drawing by more than 200 artists).

Since 2014 Evhen Karas has been an author and curator of major national group project «Ukrainian Landscape» that should be presented in 2014 at the Ukrainian Independence day.
